Company Holiday Card

The Challenge

I was tasked with coming up with a unique card to send to clients, collaborators, and the general public wishing viewers happy holidays. In order to follow a wintery theme without being holiday specific, and bring my office together, I came up with an idea to teach my fellow coworkers how to make quilled paper snowflakes and hold a crafting session where people could craft, chat, and feel a bit relaxed during the work day. I used footage from this craft session to create a video card.

The Research

I first had to test how long these flakes usually take by doing a couple test flakes. The craft session would be an hour and my test flakes took around that long to make. Since I’ve made these before, I knew I would be a bit quicker than others. To avoid having unfinished flakes, I pre-rolled some of the paper strips for people to use if they got tight on time, as rolling the strips of paper is the most time consuming bit of the process.

I also tried out my teaching methods and demonstration on one coworker from my team first to flesh out how I would go about leading the session. She seemed to catch on quickly and gave me feedback on which of my tips helped her the most. With her on board, she was able to help me lead this session!

The Process

After putting together a presentation and pitching my ideas to the partners at my company, I got approval and got to work. I was very proactive in my process by getting clips ahead of time with snowflakes I had made, and scouted out different locations for future footage. I also prepped the introduction and ending clips of the video, including the time-lapse clips, editing each bit as I got more footage so it didn’t have to all wait until the end.

The Final

The final video showcases the collaborative and happy atmosphere of this crafting session and highlights the intricate details of everyones snowflakes. Pairing it with some whimsical, wintery music makes the otherwise silent video more engaging to watch. It was a fun project that allowed me to take the lead and have creative freedom while getting other people in my company involved too. Overall, it was a great success. This social media effort along with the Climate week highlight that I helped with (and can be seen @olininsta) helped increase engagement and followers on the company’s Instagram account!
